Moving guide
Moving Checklist: 8 Weeks to Move Day
A week-by-week plan for a smoother move, from the crew that runs moves across Central Virginia every week.
01
8 weeks out
- Decide on your move date and how flexible it is.
- Get quotes from movers — send photos or a video walkthrough so the quote is accurate.
- Start a folder (paper or phone) for the lease, closing papers, quotes and receipts.
- If you're moving for a new job, ask whether your employer covers moving costs.
02
6 weeks out
- Book your movers. Month-end dates and summer weekends go first.
- Go room by room and decide what's not coming. Sell, donate, or book junk removal.
- Measure large furniture and the doorways at the new place.
- If you have a piano, safe or other heavy item, mention it now so it's planned for.
03
4 weeks out
- Start packing rooms you don't use every day: guest room, attic, holiday decorations.
- Label every box with the room it's going to and a short list of what's inside.
- Book elevators or loading docks if either building has them.
- Schedule utility shut-off at the old place and start-up at the new place.
04
2 weeks out
- Pack most of the house, leaving the kitchen and daily essentials.
- Submit a change of address with USPS.
- Confirm the date, arrival time and addresses with your movers.
- Use up frozen food and pantry items you don't want to move.
05
1 week out
- Pack the kitchen, keeping out a few plates, cups and a pan.
- Pack a first-night box: sheets, towels, chargers, medications, toilet paper, basic tools.
- Take apart anything you're comfortable with — or leave it to the crew.
- Defrost and dry out the fridge and freezer if they're moving.
06
Day before
- Finish packing and seal boxes.
- Keep valuables, documents, medications and anything irreplaceable with you.
- Check where the truck can park, and clear the path from the door.
07
Move day
- Walk the home with the crew lead and point out fragile or heavy items.
- Stay reachable by phone.
- Do a final walk-through of every room, closet and cabinet before the truck leaves.
08
First week
- Unpack the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms first.
- Update your address with the Virginia DMV — Virginia requires it within 30 days of moving.
- Update your voter registration, bank, insurance and subscriptions.
- Break down boxes and recycle them, or ask your movers to take them.
